Spokesman Alan Hall told Cars.com that Sync 3 will replace MyFord Touch in all Ford vehicles by the end of the 2016 calendar year, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the system.
“We still have Sync 1, which is our non-touch-screen version of Sync, which is standard on most of our products, but that’s the base Sync system,” Hall said. “Sync 3 will be your optional Sync system.”
When Ford debuted Sync 3, it said the system would also replace MyLincoln Touch in its Lincoln luxury division. Hall confirmed that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay would also go into Lincoln’s version of Sync 3.
Plug in a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone to the system, and Android Auto or Apple CarPlay can overtake your car’s multimedia screen with apps for music, text-messaging navigation and more — many of them simplified to minimize driver distraction. The automaker’s Sync AppLink platform, which integrates separate multimedia apps, will add some enhancements, too. Among them are AAA member services with route-planning and fuel-price aids, as well as a Concur expense reporting app that can tabulate real-time vehicle mileage for expense reports.
