The Ford Ranger was launched in 1983 and was intended to offer space, strength and practicality in a more economical package. As such, it was available with a range of smaller four-cylinder engines, although top-end models had the option of a 2.9-liter V6. Both manual and automatic transmissions were available. In 1986, a Super-cab version that had more space behind the front seats was also offered. In 1989 the second-generation model appeared, with anti-lock brakes. Regular models had the choice of manual or auto gearboxes, but Super-cab models were automatic only. A new 4.0-liter V6 was also offered. The second-generation Ford Ranger was replaced in 1993.
