Jun 04, 2008 Burns Excellent Member. Unscrew the shift knob. It just unscrews by turning it counter-clockwise. Unscrew what you see under the cupholder. Pull up the rug at the bottom of the console storage area and unscrew what you see there too. After that's done, grab the whole assembly and pull it towards the back of the truck. Dear scrodney-- Help is available in every town at a transmission specialist. Your problem with your 1998 Toyota Tacoma can be as simple as low fluid level or using the wrong fluid. Or, it could be a major transmission with the internal part of the transmaission itself. Let a pro look at it and try to avoid reacting on advice from some well meaning friend. Good luck from Bovan.
